Hello Faircrest Farms Friends!
Rita and I often say that farming is about “Dancing with Nature.” This week, Nature reminded us that sometimes she changes the music!
We just received notice that September 15 is the last day of our Pineview secondary water supply. In past years, we've had water until October 15, so this was quite a surprise!
Our response? Dance! And start figuring out how to finish the season using only our house water supply. And, of course, we're praying for rain.  
Last week we also danced with a raccoon who discovered our Concord grapes. He was making remarkably quick work of them! We managed to rescue about six pounds for the Ogden Farmers Market—and they disappeared almost immediately. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who thought they were delicious!
 This Week's Harvest
Our Yukon Gold potatoes are looking pretty good! It's only our second year growing potatoes, and we still have 4½ beds waiting to be dug.
Tomatoes are finally turning red! After all that summer heat, it's wonderful to see the plants rewarding us with a late-season flush of color.
And this is our first year growing kohlrabi. Some of them are getting to be about the size of baseballs—and we're pretty excited about them!
 What's Happening in the Fields
With only about 12½ hours of daylight and cooler temperatures, the farm is definitely beginning to slow down.
We're busy:
- Transplanting lettuce, arugula, and other leafy greens
 Experimenting with cucumbers and zucchini in the solarium—they seem surprisingly happy there! Marking our best plants and fruits for seed collection Planting cover crops to feed and protect the soil through winter
As farmers, we're learning that every season has its work—and its gifts.

We're definitely in a time of transition now—more plucking up, less planting, and plenty of dancing. The garden is teaching us again that we don't get to choose the seasons. We get to participate in them. And that's one of the things we love most about farming.
