Hello Faircrest Farms Friends!
What a gift to enjoy a lovely weekend in the highlands of central Utah! Thanks to our wonderful farm crew, Rita and I were able to get away and take in the fall beauty.
Back at the farm, the cucumbers in our solarium continue to climb, putting out plenty of flowers. We’re holding out hope for a Thanksgiving cucumber harvest! Meanwhile, with daylight now dipping below 11 hours and temperatures cooling, the pace of growth is slowing. We’ve adjusted our farm crew’s start time to 9 am, letting the morning warm up a little before we get to work.
This Week’s Harvest
We harvested our very first bag of spinach—a small but welcome sign that spinach season has begun!
There’s still plenty of salad mix and arugula for your autumn meals, while many of our other vegetables are winding down for the season. Enjoy these fresh greens while they’re here!
Winter Season: A New Ordering Rhythm
With the Ogden Farmers Market now finished for the season until May, we’re shifting into our winter farm rhythm.
Rather than updating our online inventory just once on Wednesday at 11:30 am, we’ll now post available produce twice a week as it’s harvested and ready. This gives you more opportunities to catch the fresh offerings as they become available.
Our pickup times remain unchanged:
-
Wednesday: 4–7 pm
-
Thursday: 8–noon
-
Friday: 8–noon
-
Saturday: 8–noon
Keep an eye on our online shop and enjoy the harvest as the season unfolds.
In the Fields: Garlic for Next Summer!
We’re excited to have found Sundries Farm in southern Idaho, a wonderful grower of flavorful hardneck garlic. We’ve planted five pounds of their Chesnok Red (Shvelisi') garlic, a variety prized for its rich flavor and loved by French chefs.
Now we wait through winter for those cloves to establish and grow. Come July, we hope to have a generous harvest of garlic for your kitchen!
Meanwhile, cover-crop sowing continues. The recent rain gave our first planting a beautiful start. Preparing the beds for winter cover crops takes considerable effort, and we’re now turning our attention to mulching and composting—nourishing the soil that will nourish next year’s harvest.
Words of Wisdom
As we enjoy the changing leaves and the beauty of autumn, this poem feels especially fitting:
“Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.”
— Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861), English poet
May we take a moment to notice the sacred beauty in the ordinary: the colors of a leaf, the smell of freshly turned soil, and the food growing quietly in our fields.
