Dear Faircrest Farms Friends, This week’s harvest is full of flavor and meaning — from spinach, cilantro, and bok choi to the seeds of next year’s bounty.
As the weather swings wetter and cooler, we’re excited to announce that Spinach, Cilantro, Dill, and Bok Choi are back in season! Our cool-weather greens are also looking strong and vibrant, ready to brighten your fall plates. Turnips, carrots, kale and chard make for delicious, robust soups!
Fun on the Farm
We had special visitors this week — our grandkids from Idaho! It was the perfect time for picking apples and carrots. One little harvester proudly pulled her first carrot… and ate most of it herself.
They also braved the tomato forest in our high tunnel, which is still going strong. We’re so grateful for the protection the tunnel gives us to extend our tomato and cucumber season deep into fall.
And yes — our salad mix was a hit at our weekend family gathering! There’s nothing quite like sharing a meal built from the farm’s bounty.
From the Fields
We managed to get the cover crop in just before the heavy rains — 1.1 inches! Perfect timing. We now have our seed garlic, so we'll be planting that later this week.
With the full moon this week, our thoughts turn to the earth and the biodynamic preparations that help enrich the soil and enhance the vitality of our food.
We’ve also begun sowing indoors to prepare for transitioning the high tunnel into winter production. Our home-cured compost is a vital ingredient! With Pineview secondary water now shut off for the season (as of October 1st), we’ll be keeping a close eye on the forecast as we balance moisture and protection.
Community Event: Grow Ogden Fall Farm Fest
This Saturday, October 11th, 5:30–7:30 PM. (See flier below)
Join us as we celebrate the second Grow Ogden Job Training Program! We’ll be indoors at the same location - this year due to the forecast, but the fun continues with:
Game stations for all ages
-
Magic Mont’s farm-inspired magic show
Free pizza and food
Pumpkin painting
Silent auction and raffle prizes: Minky Couture blankets, $50 dining gift cards, power tools, produce baskets, and more.
Come celebrate community, good food, and the future of Grow Ogden!
Seed Collection Season
It’s seed-saving time! We’ve created a strategy and are now following our plan to collect, clean, and label seeds from our best crops. Many of these locally adapted seeds will be available at Ogden’s Annual Seed Swap in February. Each generation of these seeds becomes a little more tuned to Ogden’s unique climate — producing more flavorful, resilient vegetables year after year.
Special Thanks
We’re deeply grateful for our amazing farm crew, who continue to flex and adapt with the changing weather and the natural winding down of the growing season. Their care and commitment make every harvest possible.
