Dear Faircrest Farms Friend, Daylight’s fading fast, but our fields are still full of life! See what’s growing, meet our new assistant farmer, and learn how your support can help local WSU students enjoy fresh veggies each week.
Already daylight has dropped to just 11.2 hours, and the plants can feel it. Growth has slowed dramatically as the season leans toward frost—forecasted to arrive around October 28.
We’re grateful for every remaining day of warmth. Our pole beans are still pumping out a hearty harvest, and with a bit of frost protection, a new round of bush beans should carry us into early November. Turnips and carrots continue strong, while lettuce and arugula are pacing themselves beautifully to match the shorter days.
From the Field
Our leafy seedlings are looking fantastic—soon they’ll be transplanted into the high tunnel for their protected winter home. We’re sowing bunching onions and beets now to tide us through the cold months ahead.
The recent rains brought a green wave across our fields as the cover crops sprouted thick and healthy. We’re feeling grateful for this season of transition—gathering in what the field gives while preparing for winter growth under cover.
Farm Staff Update
After a full season of hard work, we’re delighted to welcome Dave Humphrey as our new Assistant Farmer at Faircrest Farms. Dave is beginning his apprenticeship, diving into the fundamentals of biodynamics and soil health. His enthusiasm for farm work—and his steady hands—will help us continue producing delicious, vibrant vegetables all winter long.
Fresh Vegetables for WSU Students from Nepal
On Monday, October 13, Weber State University held an International Student Produce Drive, calling on neighbors to share their garden surplus with students—particularly from Nepal—who long for fresh vegetables but face limited access and funds.
Many of these students come from low-income families and live together to keep costs low. Their diets center on rice and fresh vegetables, which are hard to find locally at an affordable price. Faircrest Farms was glad to join others in donating produce to support them.
If you’d like to help us share more farm-fresh food with these students, please text Farmer Karl at 484-636-8150 to contribute funds.
Community Celebration – Grow Ogden’s Fall Farm Fest
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who braved the cold and rain to celebrate 3 years of relaunching lives through farming at Grow Ogden’s Fall Farm Fest!
Over 200 neighbors gathered to play games, share pizza, and learn more about Eden Streets’ mission. Your presence and support made the evening bright, even as the weather turned gray. We’re deeply grateful for this community that continues to grow with us.
