Hello Faircrest Farms Friends!
Saturday's 0.53 inches of rain, combined with several days of cool weather, have rejuvenated the farm to a whole new level of beauty and growth. Nearly all of our vegetable, herb, and flower transplants are now in the ground, and we're entering a new season of exponential growth.
Take a look around the front yard and you'll see signs of summer everywhere—clematis climbing, snapdragons blooming, milkweed opening for pollinators, borage buzzing with bees, lavender beginning to flower, and chives putting on a show. The annual fireworks display of color is just getting started.
This Week's Harvest
This week marks the arrival of one of our favorite seasonal treats: garlic scapes.
Garlic scapes are the tender flowering shoots of hardneck garlic, available for only a brief two-week window each year. Their mild garlic flavor makes them wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. Try them sautéed with vegetables, grilled alongside meats, chopped into salads, or blended into a fresh garlic scape pesto.
Along with garlic scapes, we're continuing to harvest an abundance of fresh greens and early-season vegetables from the farm.
At the Market
Providence provided an unexpected opportunity this season as we were accepted into the Ogden Farmers Market.
You'll find us in a wonderful location just outside the Ogden Amphitheater on the south side of the street between Washington and Grant Avenues. Our first market helped us move the last of our seedlings as part of our Grow Ogden fundraiser, and we were delighted to see how quickly the surprise turnips disappeared from our stand.
We're currently scheduled for two June market dates, one in July, and every market throughout August and September. We're excited to share Faircrest Farms' delicious abundance with even more neighbors and friends throughout the season.
In the Field
Transplanting has been our primary focus over the past week. Our goal is simple: fill every bed with thriving crops and remove every weed competing for their space.
The farm is transitioning from spring preparation to summer production, and the results are becoming visible everywhere you look. The fields are filling in beautifully, and we're grateful for the combination of timely rain, healthy soil, and many helping hands.
If you haven't visited lately, we'd love to show you around. Come tour Faircrest Farms—things are looking really good!
Words of Wisdom
"When I go into the garden with a spade and dig a bed I feel such an exhilaration and health that I discover that I have been defrauding myself all this time in letting others do for me what I should have done with my own hands."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
