Dear Faircrest Farms Friend, August Abundance – New Flavors, Fall Prep, and Flower Power
Happy August! The sun is shifting from Cancer to Leo, and with it comes a fiery burst of growth and color. This is the season of abundant harvests, and we’re filled with gratitude for the miracle that is summer on the farm.
We’re harvesting red hibiscus petals for winter teas—an herbal delight to savor when the snow flies. Meanwhile, okra and beans are surging, and we’re picking tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and peppers every two to three days. Things are moving fast!
New this week: Nasturtium leaves – bright, delicate, vitamin-packed, and perfect for salads and sandwiches. Think of them as nature’s spicy little lettuce.
Brighten your home with one of our summer bouquets – a splash of farm color for your table or desk.
And yes… we let a few turnips go a little wild. You haven’t seen a turnip until you’ve seen a mammoth one!
From the Field We’re always planting ahead to keep your table full:
Transplanting cucumbers for fall
Sowing greens: lettuce, arugula, collards, and chard
Planting more roots: carrots, beets, radishes, bunching onions, and turnips (right-sized ones for Thanksgiving!)
Feeding the soil with comfrey ferment tea – our plants love the boost during this summer heat
Trellising tomatoes and cucumbers to keep them climbing toward the sun
