Hello Faircrest Farms Friends! Clearly, with Friday’s 1.25 inches of rain and the cooler temperatures, we are moving into the second “octel” of summer. The change is noticeable here on the farm.
In just one week, solar radiation dropped 18% — from 131k kW/m² to 107k kW/m². The days are getting shorter, and even the geese seem to be getting restless. We’re responding by pulling back the covers on our growing areas so our plants can soak up every bit of available sunlight.
It feels like the farm is beginning its gentle turn toward autumn.
This Week’s Harvest
Our cornucopia of Faircrest produce continues to grow!
New this week:
- Bok choy
- Cantaloupe
- Rhubarb
Coming in strong:
And we have a bumper crop of lettuce and arugula! In fact, the abundance helped us have our best-ever day at the Ogden Farmers Market. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us!
In the Fields
Our biggest challenge right now is a good one:
Keeping up with the harvest!
Beyond harvesting, the crew is busy “flipping” beds — clearing finished crops and preparing those beds for the next planting. We’re also sowing, weeding, and getting ready for the crops that will carry us into fall.
There is always something growing, something being harvested, and something new being planted at Faircrest.
Help Wanted — Join Our Farm Crew
We’re looking for a new part-time crew member to replace Rayne Carter, who is excited to pursue a career in floral arranging. We’re grateful for Rayne’s contribution to the farm and wish her well in this next adventure!
We’re looking for someone who can work mornings, part-time, from now through October — someone who is passionate about growing food, willing to work hard, and excited to learn about organic farming.
Do you know someone who might be a good fit?
Please have interested applicants contact me at Karl@faircrestfarms.org.
Website Upgrades for Easier Shopping
My son Aaron has been helping us improve the Faircrest Farms website. We hope the new Shop Now page will make it easier to see what is currently available and find what you’re looking for.
Because we update our inventory on Wednesday mornings, right before this newsletter goes out, Wednesday afternoon is a great time to place your order while the harvest is fresh and before popular items sell out.
New to Faircrest? Here's How Pickup Works
Over the past month, we've welcomed about 50 new newsletter subscribers! Welcome — we're so glad you're here.
If you've never ordered from Faircrest Farms before, you may be wondering how pickup works.
It's easy!
Your order is harvested and packed into a bag with your name on it. We place it in our famous blue cooler, right by the farm sign at the front of the farm. (See photo.)
The cooler is less than 20 steps from the curb of our front driveway, so you can simply pull in, pick up your order, and be on your way. Remember, we’re less than half a mile down the hill from McKay Dee Hospital at 4116 Madison Ave, Ogden, UT.
We hope this makes trying Faircrest Farms for the first time feel easy and convenient.
